In the early history of America, western borders of most colonies were different from what the state borders are today. The British controlled large territories all the way up to the Mississippi River. During this time the colony of Virginia included all of the lands of what is now called West Virginia.

New England Colonies
These colonies had good harbors and were full of small farms and small towns. Their trade was centered around harbors. The land in this area is hilly and has many forests. In these colonies the people fished, harvested lumber, and were trappers. These peoples main focuses were family, education, and religion.

These colonies are full of rivers and valleys which are very good for communication. There are also rolling hills that provided fertile soil. This area was called the "breadbasket" which means they provided most of the colonies foods from their large farms. These colonies had the most diverse population. These colonies manufactured things like iron, ships, glass, and paper.
